Drug-induced Neuropathy
Possibly the majority of Neuropathies are Caused by Drugs. Below is a list of those drugs known to cause Neuropathy.
Drugs Cause Neuropathy based partly on dose and duration of use, and use of some of these Drugs can be a good risk/benefit decision, for example, using Chloroquine during two weeks of travel to a location which is endemic for malaria. Use of vitamin B6 at appropriate doses is believed to present no measurable risk, and only its abuse at high doses can cause Neuropathy.
Dilantin (phenytoin) Epilepsy
Cordarone (amiodarone) Arrhythmia
Nydrazid (isoniazid) Tuberculosis (antibiotic)
Myambutol (ethambutol) Tuberculosis (antibiotic)
Metrolotion (metronidazole) Anti-infective (fungus) [caution, currently used topically as rosacea treatment, for which the risk of Neuropathy is presumably much lower.]
Macrodantin (nitrofurantoin) Anti-infective urinary tract
Chloromycetin (chloramphenicol) Last resort antibiotic for life-threatening infections
Fulvicin, Grisactin (griseofulvin) Antifungal antibiotic
Aralen (chloroquine) – Malaria
Antabuse (disulfiram) Chronic alcoholism
Dapsone (dapsone) Dermatitis Herpetiformis, Leprosy
Tagamet (cimetidine) Active stomach ulcer
Colchicine (colchicines) Acute gouty arthritis
Apresoline, Apresazide (hydralazine) Hypertension diuretic
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) Abusively high doses can cause neuropathy.
Synovir (Thalidomide) Leprosy, weight loss associated with AIDS
chemotherapy (many drugs used for cancer)
Myochrysine (gold injected intramuscularly) Rheumatoid arthritis
